Fifth and Sixth Grade Mathematics Curriculum

Fifth grade math solidifies the understanding of all whole number processes (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing) through teacher led instruction, discovery activities, math centers, and extensive computational practice. The course then progresses to decimals and fractions, probability, measurement, problem solving strategies and graphs. Basic geometrical shapes and simple areas and perimeters are explored. These concepts are solidified through an architecture project completed while on the 5th grade Savannah outdoor education trip in the spring. Students continue to study pre-algebra concepts throughout the year using the Hands-On Equations Program, which teaches students how to write and work with equations and number sentences. The web-based CORE software and an independent Curriculum on Wheels (COW) unit enable students to visually absorb new concepts through entertaining videos, songs, and games that are projected on the electronic white board. The classroom is equipped with a SMART board that provides access to internet-based activities and student manipulation of math principles.

The sixth grade math program reviews and extends the fifth grade program in the first trimester, as necessary. Students continue to further expand their ability to utilize problem solving skills, measurement, geometry, probability, and statistics. The balance of the year focuses on a study of pre-algebra concepts. The Hands-On Equations Program is a primary tool in teaching and practicing these concepts. Simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division equations are mastered in algebraic form. Basic formulas on distance, temperatures and geometry are learned. The manipulation of positive and negative integers concludes the years’ study.
