Pre-Kindergarten 4 Curriculum
Language Arts

The RPDS program utilizes a thematic approach that introduces children to an alphabet letter each week using developmentally appropriate, multi-sensory activities. These activities are designed to promote phonemic awareness, reading readiness, letter recognition, visual perceptual skills, sound/symbol relationships, comprehension skills and memory skills.
Emergency Literacy
Emerging Literacy is an exciting part of our curriculum, as it introduces children to the correlation between the spoken and written word. Through activities such as “Author of the Day”, writing class books, making letter journals and working with rhymes, the children are empowered by having their ideas translated into print.
Mathematics
Children participate in concrete activities designed to develop the basic building blocks fundamental to mathematical readiness. Concepts introduced include patterns, shapes, one-to-one correspondence, numeral recognition, graphing, sorting and classifying according to likenesses and differences. Manipulative materials offer concrete experiences for building early mathematical confidence. These math concepts are often introduced in the framework of the weekly theme.
Science/Social Studies
Concepts related to science and society are explored through units of study such as insects, reptiles, plants, zoo animals, the environment, transportation, friends, neighborhoods, community helpers, weather patterns and the universe.
Fine Motor Skills
Our curriculum emphasizes strengthening the smallest hand muscles that are vital to coordination and control of the fingers. A variety of activities occur daily, such as cutting, coloring, manipulating clay, stringing beads and easel painting. These simple experiences develop a strong foundation that is enhanced by the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum. Handwriting Without Tears uses coloring, drawing, singing, and counting to foster school readiness. It is a fun, hands on approach to further develop essential readiness skills and the correct development of upper case letter formation.
