After passing the written portion of the District Spelling Bee, Grady Gillam (6th Grade) will now participate in the District Oral Spelling Bee.

Perhaps you are a "rock solid" personality. Granite. Concrete. Others know that they can depend upon you in every way; they tell you so. Or, perhaps you are a woman or man "of steel." This is especially popular with moms and dads who grew up toting DC or Marvel Comics, studying the Hall of Justice and imagining that they could deflect any threat or withstand any onslaught. Do you realize that even in the best of circumstances neither rock solid concrete nor steel is as strong individually as they are together?

Over the last twenty years or so, a consistent theme of employers has been that American education is not providing candidates with the underlying literacy and computational skills needed for employment. The most frequently mentioned deficits involve phonics, vocabulary, spelling, reading comprehension and computational math.

Whether we are judging the age-appropriateness of an experience, or the introduction of an educational concept, we should ask ourselves if the necessary perspective and experiences have been mastered to appreciate them.
