We need to remember that in education, building foundational skills and cumulative knowledge takes time, practice and patience. Language acquisition (English included) is not instantaneous; success in Algebra is built upon mastery of math facts and computational skills. Proficiency in studio art hinges upon theory, history, reflection and practice. Our cultural impatience is driving a rising expectation that we surely must be able to skip steps to reach for more rapid results; "there must be a faster way!" I continue to feel that there is a wonderfully healthy opportunity here, if we will take time to "refresh, reform, and renew." The highest peak affords the best view. To scale such a summit always takes time and care. Shortcuts and the substitution of "good enough" hilltops will prove unfulfilling and second-rate.
