RPDS offers two levels of robotics teams: FIRSTLEGO League for students in 4th - 6th Grade, and FIRSTLEGO League Jr. for students in 1st - 3rd Grade.
The FIRSTLEGO League theme for this year is INTO ORBIT. The 2018/2019 FIRSTLEGO League season will transport each team into space, where they will explore, challenge, and innovate in the vast expanse of space. FIRSTLEGO League challenges kids to think like scientists and engineers. During the INTO ORBIT season, teams will choose and solve a real-world problem as a Project. They will also build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology to solve a set of missions in the Robot Game. Throughout their experience, teams will operate under the FIRST signature set of Core Values, celebrating discovery, teamwork, and Gracious Professionalism. The FIRSTLEGO League team will compete locally with other North Florida teams in December. These teams are judged on their Project, their programming in the Robot Game, as well as how they demonstrate the Core Values of FIRST, which emphasize the importance of teamwork, friendly competition, and problem solving. During the 2017/2018 season, RPDS Team LEGObots won the Judges Choice Award, one of 6 awards given out to the 21 participating teams. This award recognized the RPDS Team's enthusiasm and effortless teamwork demonstrated throughout the day.
For our younger students, the theme in the 2018/2019 season for FIRSTLEGO League Jr. is MISSION MOON. Each team will transport to a place where they will make the rules, learn to thrive in a new environment, and explore all that is around them. These teams utilize the LEGO WEDO 2.0 robots. The FIRST LEGO League Jr. season culminates with Expos where teams show off what they learned and created.
