Dear Riverside Parents,
As we begin Riverside's virtual learning plan amid a time of uncertainty and stress, I wanted to reach out to you personally to let you know that I am available to provide any support and help you may need. Many of you have reached out already with questions about how to navigate the ever-changing Coronavirus with your children without causing undue fear and anxiety. I'd like to offer some tips that you may find useful here:
First, it is okay to not have the answer to your children's questions. It is difficult to answer questions when events change daily.
Check in with your own emotions. Children are intuitive and can sense it when you are worried, anxious or even confused. It is completely understandable that you may be experiencing many different feelings on top of an already stressful and busy life. If you are feeling overwhelmed, find someone you trust to talk to. Once you have talked about your own feelings around Coronavirus, you will have more capacity to listen to your child about theirs. Here is an excellent resource on taking care of ourselves in times of uncertainty:

Once you have given your children plenty of opportunities to talk about their feelings, you can help them understand age-appropriate facts about Coronavirus. Offer to answer any questions about Coronavirus and let them know that you are willing to discuss the things they may have heard. Here are a few resources for explaining Coronavirus in age appropriate ways:

Lastly, give your child reassurance by letting them know that it is your job as their parent to keep them safe. Practice prayer, mindfulness and relaxation together to calm anxiety and keep everyone grounded. These are some links that offer calming activities and mindfulness tools:
