Counseling Services and Guidance
RPDS is committed to providing high-quality character education, counseling services and academic
support for its students. It is within our foundation that we believe emotional intelligence influences learning,
decision making, communication and our relationships with others. We strive to foster
relationships by encouraging our school community to appreciate, understand and learn from others,
thus demonstrating God’s unconditional love.
Our evidence-based approach to character education is based on Yale University’s Center for Emotional
Intelligence RULER approach to teaching emotional intelligence. RULER is an acronym that stands for
Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing and Regulating emotions. The fundamental RULER
tools enhance our ability to understand, express and regulate emotions and empathize with how others
RPDS has a full-time, licensed professional counselor on campus to provide individual or small group
support for students, parents, teachers, and staff. Riverside students and parents may receive on-
campus support in areas such as strengthening peer relationships, academic achievement, grief
counseling, stress and anxiety management, self-esteem and mindfulness.
