Taking time for childhood is not a metaphor for mediocrity, weakened aspirations or "shooting low," as these are not alternative routes to forming the strong foundations that provide an essential core upon which to build all that will follow.

For lasting friendships to flourish, even to "the horns of the altar," we must be able to discern the marks of it and to be willing to demonstrate those characteristics without fabrication.

February has been used to annually celebrate Black History Month since 1976. Truth be told, trying to compartmentalize history, let alone a racial history, into a month is hampering in a variety of ways. Black History is American History and neither is complete without the other. Both should be celebrated year around. In educational circles across America, teachers naturally interweave the two and for nearly 40 years February has advanced that approach. My love of the sciences fostered an immediate affinity with the biography of Dr. Percy Julian.
